~DOME FUTURE?~

New South Pole Station

With the first menacing pods of the New South Pole Elevated Station looming in in the distance, does the nearly half buried Dome in fact have a future?

There is hope that tearing down the dome will be put off for years to come and that it can remain a constant fixture on the Antarctic Plateau. Yet this hope is dwindling as construction continues on the New Station and the Dome becomes more outdated and useless. We feel that once gutted of its buildings, the Dome could be used for additional cold storage.

Could the Dome be disassembled and shipped off to become a functional museum? Certainly! Yet to be torn down, cut up and recycled seems to be the most inexpensive way to get rid of this formidable piece of History.

Large sums of money would be required to disassemble the Dome, pack it up, fly it towards McMurdo and then ship it to it's final destination. Then there is the reconstruction which would require vast ammounts of labor and of course the correct climatic conditions. Yes, the Dome is not water-proof and would require a hot or cold dry climate to be of any structural use.

Many ideas of where the Dome should reside have passed across our eyes and ears and with cut and paste technology we have created an exciting array of future dome photos to share with you. If you would care to submit your own entry, please contact the webmaster here at Save The Dome.com.
