~DOME FUTURE?~
-
New South Pole Elevated Station

The New Elevated Station

Creeping out of the darkness the vertical circulation tower and the first pods (A-1 & A-2) of the New Elevated Station threatens the future of the Dome and yet brings a new era of science, technology and plenty of amenities to the South Pole. Unfortunately this new design will also make the 300-Club virtually impossible, ending a long history of South Polar Winter Tradition.

Once finished, the New Elevated Station will be cabable of housing 150 people and will include a full sized gymnasium/weight room, a Galley, Medical Facilities, Operations Office Spaces, Conference Rooms, a Communications Center and Science Spaces. A person in the right job could literally spend an entire season at the South Pole with never having to go outside!! Is that scary or what?

Certainly this is the most formidable construction project ever attempted on the Continent of Antarctica. With the majority of the construction taking place in the austral summer months, polies face the task of building this monstrosity under tight time and budget constraints in temperatures averaging at -30 degrees below zero Fahrenheit.

Construction will continue every year until the station is completed, now scheduled for Fiscal Year 2006. Below you can see a map of what the New Station will look like and how it will grow over the upcoming years. Sadly, however, we see the notation that the "Dome is to be removed."

The New South Pole Station 2006

The United States Antarctic Program has outgrown the Dome and it's resources and the New Elevated Station is a welcome site to most of us polies. This does not mean however, that destruction of the famed Dome should be imminent. No, the new station will require areas in which to house cold storage. The Old Garage Arch (seen in dark blue above) will be the future cold storage wherehousing area. Why not incorporate the Dome? We here at Save The Dome.com can definitely see the benefit of the Dome in a New Elevated Station support role.
